The Blurb:
When she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.
My Review:
If you’re like us and missed this novel- released in the golden days of 2017, you will want to hurry up and catch up with this read! I kicked off 2022 with an audible subscription that wouldn’t go away- a trial period turned to full blown subscription (which in typical Marsha fashion, I forgot to cancel)…and maybe for a good reason! The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was my first ever audio book experience.
I am a sucker for the golden age of Hollywood- to me, it holds onto the star archetype so wholly and truly. Something I feel with the introduction of social media we have lost. Pro’s and con’s to both but for me I like the element of mystery that stars and celebrities carried with their names.
If you’re intrigued by fame and celebrity, after reading a few memoirs and autobiographies you quickly hear that fame is an empty glass and following such desires and goals will very quickly leave you empty.
Evelyn Hugo walks you through that experience and the emptiness is offers. With themes of being a women in Hollywood being so exposed now, reading this book felt to me like something most Hollywood starlets certain experienced in some form or another.
This novel highlights key themes of friendship, truth, acceptance and vulnerability in love and shows the reader what is really important.
If you’re looking for twists and turns, love, friendship, classic Hollywood this read is for you.
Not for those overly sensing and logical with no interest into the lives of Hollywoods starlets!
